NOT FOR SKIN. Cinnamon and cassia essential oils are dermal sensitizers at this concentration. Keep the oiled cloth from skin contact. Patch-test fabric in an inconspicuous corner first — some oils may stain delicate silk. Keep away from children and pets.

About this recipe

*All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.* So Psalm 45 describes the king's wedding garments — perfumed deep into the cloth, scenting the rooms the king passed through. This is the household scale of that practice: a light cassia-and-cinnamon-infused oil used on fabric sachets, on the inside of dresser drawers, or on a square of cotton tucked between linens. Not for direct skin contact — cinnamon and cassia oils are dermal irritants at the concentrations needed to scent fabric — but as a wardrobe perfume, a quietly luxurious detail.

Rooted in the herbal traditions of the ancient Near East — adapted for the modern kitchen.

Ingredients

  • 2 oz fractionated coconut oil (clear, won't solidify or stain) (neutral carrier)
Lightweight, fast-absorbing skin softening — supports Skin
  • 15 drops cinnamon essential oil (leaf or bark) (cinnamaldehyde)
Warming & immune — supports Immune & Defenses
  • 15 drops cassia essential oil (cinnamaldehyde)
  • 5 drops myrrh essential oil (sesquiterpenes)
Skin healing — supports Skin · Nervous System & Mood
  • Small square of cotton or muslin for the sachet

Method

  1. 1 Combine all oils in a 2 oz dropper bottle.
  2. 2 Cap and shake well.
  3. 3 To use: place 3-5 drops on a cotton square and tuck into a drawer, wardrobe, or linen closet.
  4. 4 Refresh the cotton square every 2-3 weeks.
  5. 5 For seasonal storage of wool or cashmere, the same blend helps deter moths.

What you'll notice

  • Light scent for drawers and closets
  • Deters moths and silverfish
  • Inexpensive wardrobe perfume
  • Refresh sachets monthly
  • For fabric — DO NOT apply to skin

Tips & storage

Tip

The combination quietly repels moths and silverfish — Psalm 45's practical secondary benefit. For sweaters in summer storage, refresh the cotton square monthly.

Storage

Dark glass, cool; 1 year.
