*All thy garments smell of myrrh, and aloes, and cassia, out of the ivory palaces, whereby they have made thee glad.* So Psalm 45 describes the king's wedding garments — perfumed deep into the cloth, scenting the rooms the king passed through. This is the household scale of that practice: a light cassia-and-cinnamon-infused oil used on fabric sachets, on the inside of dresser drawers, or on a square of cotton tucked between linens. Not for direct skin contact — cinnamon and cassia oils are dermal irritants at the concentrations needed to scent fabric — but as a wardrobe perfume, a quietly luxurious detail.

Method

1 Combine all oils in a 2 oz dropper bottle.

Scripture & Scholarship

Psalm 45:8 names myrrh, aloes (ahalim — biblical aloes = agarwood, not the modern aloe vera plant), and cassia (qətsi'ōṯ) as the fragrances of the king's garments. The cassia of scripture is Cinnamomum cassia, the related "Chinese cinnamon" bark — distinct from the Cinnamomum verum (Ceylon cinnamon) called kinnamon elsewhere. Both barks were imported from East and Southeast Asia along the long-distance trade routes that connected the eastern Mediterranean with India, China, and the spice islands; their presence in biblical poetry by the time of David indicates how established that trade had become by the early 1st millennium BCE. The "ivory palaces" of the same verse refers to ivory-paneled state rooms; the scent of myrrh, aloeswood, and cassia diffusing from textiles into such a room is the ancient version of fine perfumery.
