About this recipe
Frankincense — *lebonah* in Hebrew, *olibanum* in Greek — is the scent of approach in scripture. It rose with the morning and evening sacrifice in the Tabernacle, it was carried as a gift to the infant Christ, and in the Revelation of John the prayers of the saints ascend before God "with much incense." This is the simplest of all biblical anointings: a drop on the chest, a slow breath, a settling into prayer. Whether engaged devotionally, contemplatively, or just as a pause in the day, the oil keeps company with thousands of years of human attention turned upward.
