Biblical Recipes

14 recipes drawn from scripture — the two formulas explicitly given (Exodus 30's Holy Anointing Oil and Holy Incense) together with household preparations rooted in named biblical botanicals: myrrh, frankincense, spikenard, hyssop, cassia, cedar, and the bitter herbs of remembrance.

Devotional framing · Scholarly footnotes

The Bible is not a recipe book. Unlike Ayurvedic literature, scripture does not generally teach formulation — it references aromatic substances as trade goods, ritual materials, perfumes, gifts, and signs of wealth or holiness. But the texts are unusually rich in named botanicals, and the ancient Near East had a sophisticated apothecary tradition that's recoverable through scriptural references and corroborated by archaeology.

Two passages give us explicit formulas — Exodus 30:22-25 (the Holy Anointing Oil) and Exodus 30:34-36 (the Holy Incense). The other recipes here are derived from how named substances appear in practice: anointing, purification, embalming, perfuming, the dipping of bread, the bitter herbs of Passover. Each carries its Scripture & Scholarship footnote with chapter-and-verse citations and notes on the scholarly identification of the original Hebrew or Greek substance.

The framing is devotional and contemplative, not a claim of spiritual benefit from substances themselves. Healing Almanac original recipes and Ayurvedic classical formulas live alongside these on the main Recipes page and the Ayurvedic Recipes section.
