Don't use directly over a too-hot bowl — burn risk to face and eyes. Eyes closed. Asthma sufferers: introduce eucalyptus cautiously; the cineole can be triggering for some asthmatics. Children under 6: skip eucalyptus EO (potential respiratory paradoxical effect); use just the herbal water. Pregnancy: thyme in steam (not internal medicinal dose) is fine.

About this recipe

*Swedana* — the Ayurvedic practice of sweating/steaming for clearing ama and opening srotas (channels) — adapted for the most common household need: respiratory congestion. Eucalyptus opens the airways; thyme is antimicrobial to the upper respiratory tract; ginger warms and pushes outward. Best at the first sign of a cold or for chronic sinus thickness.

Classical Ayurvedic formula — adapted with respect for the original tradition.

Ingredients

Method

  1. 1 Bring water to a boil in a saucepan.
  2. 2 Add the thyme and ginger; simmer 5 minutes.
  3. 3 Pour the hot herbal water into a large heat-proof bowl.
  4. 4 Add the eucalyptus EO drops to the surface (do NOT add EOs during boiling — they evaporate).
  5. 5 Drape a towel over your head, lean over the bowl 8-10 inches away, eyes closed.
  6. 6 Inhale through the nose, exhale through the mouth, for 5-7 minutes. Take breaks if it feels too intense.
